TRAILER
HITCHES
Trailer Hitch Overview
Understanding hitches is quite easy. There are several
different weight classes (see below) with maximum
tow ratings, and although
some people still weld trailer hitches to the frame,
A to Z offers only top-of-the-line,
custom-fitted hitches that bolt to the frame.
Note: If your vehicle
has a towing capacity less then 2000 lbs.,
that will be the capacity
of the hitch.
The lowest value will determine your towing capacity
Hitch ClassesClass I
Maximum rated capacity 2,000 lbs
Maximum rated capacity 2,000 lbs
These hitches are usually called "fixed-bar" hitches
because the piece of metal which
serves as the ball platform (or tongue) is not
removable. However, more and more
people are making the switch to Sportframe Receiver Hitches when selecting a
Class I
hitch. Receiver-style hitches are those with
removable ball mounts.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Class I
Receiver Maximum rated capacity 2,000 lbs
These hitches are receiver-style and have additional
mounting points on the frame of
the vehicle. They have a smaller receiver tube
(1-1/4") and a ball-mount attachment
designed for that class hitch. (A class I
ball-mount will not work in a class II hitch with
the same tube size.)

Class II
Receiver Maximum rated capacity 3,500 lbs
These hitches are commonly receiver-style and have
additional mounting points on the
frame of the vehicle to allow for a higher rating.
They generally have a smaller receiver
tube (1-1/4") and a ball-mount attachment designed
to prevent the accidental hookup
of the tow vehicle to something beyond the vehicle
or hitch capacity.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Class III
Receiver Maximum rated capacity 3,500 lbs -5,000 lbs
This is the most common hitch sold, generally because of
its higher ratings. This is also
a receiver-style hitch but with a 2" receptacle to
distinguish its higher rating. This hitch is
generally rated for an even
higher towing capacity (4,000-7,500 lbs), provided a weight-
distributing setup is
installed between the tow vehicle and trailer.
As with most custom-made hitches, the intended vehicle's
power train
and suspension limit the hitch's rating...
which will help prevent damage the tow vehicle.

Ultra Frame Receiver
Maximum rated capacity 7,500 lbs
This hitch also has a 2" receptacle and is rated for an
even higher towing capacity
(7,500 lbs). These hitches are manufactured for full-size, long-wheelbase trucks
with
heavy-duty suspensions and full frames.
